Organisation: Acorns Project

Acorns (North Tyneside) is a charitable company established over the last 20 years to support families affected by domestic abuse in North Tyneside and now into Northumberland. Our services positively impact the wellbeing of families who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse, enabling their recovery and promoting resilience.

We adopt a trauma informed approach to offer a range of services for children and young people, non-abusing carers and other family members including: counselling and play therapy; 1-1 emotional and practical support; group educational programmes; an open access drop-in and a crisis service. Some of our services are provided at our premises in North Shields, others are delivered in venues throughout North Tyneside and via our outreach service in Northumberland.

We employ 12 full and part-time staff. Acorns’ Board of Trustees is responsible for over-seeing the management and strategic development of the service and we currently have five committed, dedicated trustees with a wealth of experience who have been supporting Acorns through a period of organisational change and development which has seen us expand and flourish. We would love to welcome some new trustees who are as passionate as we are about making a difference to the lives of families affected by domestic abuse and who are happy to dedicate some of their time to help us continue to thrive.

Although not a requirement, we would particularly love to hear from you if you have lived experience of domestic abuse, either as a child or as an adult, and/or if you have previously accessed Acorns services. Other skills that would benefit us include fundraising; strategic development; impact measurement; media and communications and influencing.

If you would like to chat with one of our trustees about this opportunity, please email your contact details to abby@acornsproject.org.uk and we will arrange this for you.  Alternatively, please send us your CV with a brief letter outlining your skills and why you would like to be involved with Acorns to abby@acornsproject.org.uk.  Please let us know what you feel you can bring to Acorns, and what benefit you feel you would get from being involved with our challenging and important work. Training and guidance will be provided for all new trustees. Board meetings are currently held around 8-10 times per year.
