Acorns offers a range of therapeutic and support services for children, young people and families affected by domestic violence and abuse, in North Tyneside and Northumberland.

We are recruiting for a dynamic, enthusiastic team player to develop and deliver our participation and engagement work with young people aged 13+ who have been affected by domestic violence and abuse – both in house and on an outreach basis, or remotely where appropriate, in our areas of operation – North Tyneside and Northumberland. This is an exciting opportunity to utilise your skills and experience to develop creative approaches to:

  • Support young people who access our services to have a voice and influence decision-making;
  • Increase and embed the voice and influence of young people in the delivery and management of Acorns services;
  • Develop and embed our Acorns Youth Panel, including developing membership and governance processes and increasing representation, both from within Acorns and on a wider level in the areas where we work;
  • Develop effective mechanisms to ensure representation of young people’s voices both on Acorns’ Board of Trustees and on a wider strategic level;
  • Develop strong partnerships with our key stakeholders, making links with others working in this field to ensure our work is accessible for all.

If you have:

  • A Youth Work or other relevant qualification
  • Experience in the field of youth participation or co-production
  • Experience of working in a trauma informed way with vulnerable young people who have experienced a range of challenges
  • A strong awareness of the emotional and mental health needs that may be present, and a sensitive approach to the issues that may have been experienced
  • The ability to negotiate, motivate, encourage and support personal skills and development of young people
  • Project management skills

We are recruiting for a kind, caring and motivated individual to develop and deliver our participation and engagement work with the primary carers – of any gender – whose children attend Acorns, in house and on an outreach basis, or remotely where appropriate, in our areas of operation – North Tyneside and Northumberland. This is an exciting opportunity to utilise your skills and experience to develop creative approaches to:

  • Support and enable our parents/carers to have a voice and influence decision-making;
  • Increase and embed the voice and influence of our parents/carers in the delivery and management of Acorns services;
  • Engage with parents/carers early on in their Acorns journey, ensuring a positive, trusting relationship with us from the start;
  • Identify and develop volunteering opportunities for our service users with lived experience within Acorns, including representation on our Board of Trustees.

The post holder will be responsible for developing and delivering a variety of activities such as introductory workshops, peer support groups and wellbeing sessions. If you have experience in engaging the community and supporting them to participate, and have the ability to negotiate, motivate, encourage and support personal skills and development both 1-1 and in a group setting, along with an awareness of the emotional and mental health needs that may be present – then we would love to hear from you!

Volunteer Qualified or Trainee Counsellor

We offer a range of therapeutic and support services for children, young people and families affected by domestic violence and abuse in North Tyneside and Northumberland, and we are recruiting for volunteer qualified or trainee counsellors for our Adult Recovery Service.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A counselling qualification at Diploma level 5 or above or be attending such a course
  • Relevant experience of providing emotional support
  • BACP membership, or similar, and ability to observe the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy

Role Description

We are looking for volunteers for our service which offers therapeutic counselling services for primary carers – of any gender – whose children attend Acorns.  This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a flexible, responsive service that allows us to increase our service offer, in line with the development of our ‘whole family’ approach. This service will provide individual counselling to clients showing the impact of, or going through crises and facing difficulties related to domestic abuse. Working in a confidential setting, counsellors will provide non-directive support to clients in exploring feelings, anxieties and life events that impact on their emotional wellbeing. Through this process clients are able to feel more empowered to manage their mental health and make positive life changes.

Sessional Children's Counsellor/Play Therapists - Northumberland

Part-time hours: 37 per week
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Temporary
Salary: From £40.00 per hour

We currently have an exciting opportunity for established counsellors/play therapists throughout Northumberland to become our partners in offering trauma informed counselling to the hardest to reach young people.

If you would be interested in delivering counselling/play therapy to children and young people aged 4-18 years who have been affected by domestic abuse, as part of a wider provision to reach out to families in the most rural/hard to reach areas, then please get in touch for an initial conversation. You will have a diploma in counselling, play therapy or equivalent, ideally at least 2 years post qualification experience with substantial proven practice hours and be skilled in working therapeutically with children and young people 4-18 years, as well as the appropriate registrations e.g. BACP/PTUK.

We offer person centred therapy however we welcome expressions of interest from practitioners who are trained in additional therapeutic interventions which may add value to our offer to children and young people.
